A diagnosis of any type of cancer can be life changing, bringing fear, anxiety and practical problems to overcome. The person with cancer needs to find ways of accepting the diagnosis at a personal level, and they have to deal with the treatment plan and their symptoms as well as the side effects of the treatments they receive.
More therapists are finding that clients who have cancer, or who have recovered from the illness, are coming to them for treatments. It is estimated that one in three people will have a form of cancer during their lifetime. Treating clients appropriately who have experience of cancer is vitally important for holistic and beauty therapists.
Physically, practically, mentally and emotionally a person with cancer needs to adapt, accept, adjust and cope at every level with their diagnosis. Holistic therapies do not treat the cancer, but they offer the person the fundamental experience of touch - gentle, compassionate, accepting touch that brings relaxation and enhances the natural healing abilities of the person.
